The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery has minimal charge)
- Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override slot: a small covered opening on the left side of the shifter base, near the center console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to remove the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to N
- If successful, release the override tool and verify the shifter is in N position
- If the vehicle must be moved any distance, ensure ignition remains ON to unlock the steering column
