🚨 2024 Alpine A290: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Alpine A290 is a fully electric vehicle using a monostable (spring-return) electronic shifter on the center console, based on Renault Megane E-Tech platform.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the START button with the key fob nearby
  3. If the 12V system has enough power, press the brake pedal and toggle the monostable shifter forward or backward to N position
  4. The shifter returns to center but the digital display should confirm N is selected
  5. If the 12V battery is completely dead, the electronic shifter will not respond and the vehicle cannot be shifted conventionally
  6. For completely dead 12V system: the 12V battery is located under the hood; jump-start the vehicle to restore minimal power for shifter operation
  7. Once minimal power is restored, press brake and shift to N through the electronic shifter
  8. Activate Transport Mode if vehicle must be towed: with ignition ON, access vehicle settings through the digital display, navigate to Service menu, and enable Transport/Tow Mode to disengage the electric parking brake and unlock the drivetrain
With zero electrical power
The A290 uses a fully electronic shifter with no mechanical override. With completely dead 12V battery, you must jump-start the vehicle to restore power to the shifter system and electronic parking brake. The 12V battery is under the hood (not in the rear like some EVs). Without any electrical power, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The A290 is a pure electric vehicle and must NEVER be towed with any wheels on the ground unless Transport Mode is properly activated. Towing with wheels down without Transport Mode will cause the motor to generate electricity, potentially damaging the high-voltage system and creating a fire hazard. For dead 12V battery situations where Transport Mode cannot be activated, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels secured. The electronic parking brake cannot be released without 12V power.
