⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small covered slot near the base of the shifter on the console.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the trim cover/cap adjacent to the shifter base.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter from Park.
- With the override depressed, move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle will be towed on a flatbed (recommended), you can leave it in Neutral; if using a tow dolly, consult the owner's manual for driveline precautions.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you may need to manually unlock the doors using the mechanical key hidden in the key fob. The shift lock override is mechanical and does not require power - the override mechanism physically releases the shifter lock. However, be aware that with no power, the transmission is in its default park position and steering may be locked.
