⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake if functional
- Attempt to turn the ignition to the ON position (press the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal) to energize the shifter electronics
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the gear selector lever from Park to Neutral—the shift lock should release with brake pedal pressure and ignition power
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and the ignition cannot be activated, locate the shift lock override access point near the base of the gear selector console
- Look for a small removable cover or access slot on the lower driver's side of the shifter surround
- Remove the cover using a small flat tool, insert a key or small screwdriver into the override slot, and press or pull the release mechanism while moving the shifter to Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small removable cover near the base of the gear selector console, typically on the lower driver's side of the shifter surround
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic gear selector will be locked in Park. You must access the mechanical shift lock override by removing a small trim cover near the shifter base. Insert a key or screwdriver into the override slot and actuate the release mechanism while moving the shifter. The exact mechanism may be a push-down or pull-up action. If the mechanical override cannot be located or does not work, the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground to avoid damage to the transmission.
