🚨 2024 Audi A3: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 A3 uses a monostable (spring-return) electronic shifter located on the center console that returns to center position after each selection.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button twice without brake pedal, or use emergency key access if battery is dead).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Move the shifter rearward to the D position and hold momentarily, then move it rearward again to select N (Neutral).
  5. If the shift interlock is preventing movement, locate the small circular override cap on the left side of the shifter base.
  6. Use a flat tool or key to pry off the override cap.
  7. Insert a small screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while holding the brake and moving the shifter to N.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: Use the emergency metal key (inside key fob) to unlock the driver's door. The shifter override slot can be accessed mechanically without power, but you may need to manually release the electronic parking brake by removing the rear center console panel to access the EPB actuator cable release - consult factory service manual for EPB emergency release procedure specific to this model year. Consider flatbed towing as safest option.
