⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (turn key to position II without starting engine).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the button on the side of the shifter and move to N (Neutral).
- If the shifter will not move due to shift interlock failure, locate the shift lock override slot.
- The override is typically a small covered slot near the base of the shifter assembly on the right side (passenger side) or at the front of the shifter housing.
- Remove the small plastic cap or trim piece covering the override slot.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade into the slot and press down/forward.
- While pressing the override, press the shifter button and move to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, remove the key and the vehicle can be moved.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still work mechanically. Access the override slot as described and manually override while moving the shifter to N. The steering wheel will be locked, so the vehicle must be towed on a flatbed or dolly with the front wheels raised. If using a wheel dolly, unlock the steering wheel by turning the key to position I (first click) if enough residual power exists, or carefully break the steering lock (not recommended - use flatbed instead).
