⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start engine) - if battery is dead, see no-power notes below
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot covered by a plastic cap, positioned directly to the LEFT of the shifter base on the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the plastic cover cap
- Press a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool firmly down into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you (out of Park)
- Move the shifter to Neutral
- If vehicle must be moved any distance, keep the tool inserted or have someone hold the brake pedal (if power is available) to maintain Neutral

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is MECHANICAL and will still function. Pry off the cap, insert tool into override slot, press down firmly, and move shifter to Neutral. The shifter mechanism does not require 12V power to release mechanically. You will not be able to turn the ignition to ON position, but the mechanical override works independently.
