🚨 1998 Audi A6: Emergency Neutral

The 1998 A6 (C4 generation) uses a traditional center console shifter lever for its automatic transmission, with a simpler shift lock mechanism than later generations.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position (Position II) - if battery is dead, see no-power notes below
  3. Locate the shift lock override - there is a small slot or button typically located on the left side of the shifter base, near the bottom of the shift gate
  4. The override may be accessed by removing a small plastic trim piece or cap near the shifter base
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter out of Park into Neutral
  7. The shifter should move freely once the mechanical lock is disengaged

With zero electrical power
The C4 A6 shift lock override is mechanical. With no power, you cannot turn the ignition to Position II, but the mechanical override will still release the shifter. Remove any trim cap, insert tool into override slot, press firmly, and move shifter to Neutral. No electrical power is required for the mechanical release to function.
