The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (Position II) - if battery is dead, see no-power notes below
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is typically a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap, located near the base of the shifter on the left side or front of the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the plastic cover cap
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While maintaining pressure on the override, pull the shifter toward you (rearward) out of Park
- Move the shifter to Neutral
- Keep the override tool inserted if the vehicle needs to be moved any distance

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and will function without electrical power. You will not be able to turn the ignition to Position II with a dead battery, but the mechanical override still works.
