The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or ACC if battery has some charge) to unlock the steering wheel.
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the driver's side of the shifter base — it's a small rectangular slot usually covered by a removable cap or rubber plug near the lower left side of the shifter gate.
- Remove the cap or plug by prying it gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or fingernail.
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver, key, or small Allen wrench into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the battery is completely dead and the shifter will not move even with override pressed, you may need to provide external 12V power via jump-start or battery charger to energize the shift lock solenoid.
