⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge (ACC position will not work)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override: on the driver's side of the shifter assembly near the base, there is a small rectangular cover (approximately 1 inch long)
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver into the revealed slot and press down firmly
- While pressing down on the override, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the engine can start, do so; otherwise prepare for towing in Neutral

With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift lock override works without any electrical power. However, with a completely dead battery, you may need to first manually unlock the steering column. If you cannot get the shifter to release despite using the override correctly, flatbed towing is required—the transmission may have an internal mechanical issue.
