🚨 2019 Audi A6: Emergency Neutral
The 2019 A6 (C8 generation) uses an electronic console-mounted shift lever with shift-by-wire technology and electronic parking brake.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position—the electronic shifter requires at least minimal 12V power to function.
- If you have any power: Press the brake pedal, turn ignition ON, and shift normally to Neutral.
- If completely dead: Locate the shift lock override near the shifter base—look for a small cover panel on the left side or front-left of the shifter surround.
- Pry off the small cover with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver to expose the override slot.
- Insert a screwdriver into the slot and apply pressure while attempting to move the shift lever to Neutral.
- Note: The electronic parking brake may prevent rolling even in Neutral; you may need to jump-start the battery to release the EPB or use flatbed towing.
Shift-lock override location
Small cover panel on the left side or front-left area of the shifter surround; exact position may vary slightly but look around the shifter base perimeter.
With zero electrical power
The C8 A6 has shift-by-wire and electronic parking brake, both requiring 12V power. With zero power, the mechanical override may allow shifter movement to Neutral, but the EPB will remain engaged. You must either jump-start the battery to release the EPB, or flatbed tow. The vehicle cannot be rolled even in Neutral with EPB engaged.
