The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (do not start engine)
- Look for the shift lock override access: typically a small covered slot or opening near the shifter base on the left side or front-left area of the console shifter assembly
- Remove any plastic cover cap using a small flathead screwdriver or key blade
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter lever toward you and into Neutral position
- Keep the override tool depressed until the shifter is fully in N position
- If the vehicle has no 12V power, the mechanical override is your only option—use the override as described to shift directly to N
