🚨 2004-2006 Audi A8: Emergency Neutral

The 2004-2006 A8 (D3 generation) uses a traditional console-mounted lever shifter with electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON/Accessory position if battery has any charge (do not start engine).
  3. Locate the shift-lock override access: look for a small covered slot or cap near the shifter base on the console, typically to the left or front of the shifter.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the small plastic cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter toward Neutral.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or rolled.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you must use the mechanical shift-lock override as described. The override does not require electrical power to function. Note that the steering wheel lock may engage with no power - if steering is locked, you will need to provide 12V power (jump-start) to unlock the steering column before the vehicle can be safely moved.
