🚨 2008 Audi A8: Emergency Neutral
The 2008 A8 (D3 generation) uses a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with an electronic shift lock that prevents movement out of Park without the brake pedal depressed.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition to the ON/ACC position if battery power is available (this may allow normal shifting with brake pedal)
- If no power or shift lock has failed, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the bottom of the shifter surround
- Remove the small rectangular cover cap (it may pry out with a flat screwdriver or your fingernail)
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the exposed override slot
- Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Keep your foot on the brake pedal during this operation if the vehicle has any electrical power
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You will not be able to use the ignition key release (which is electronic), but the mechanical override at the shifter base bypasses the electronic interlock. The steering wheel will remain locked, so the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
