⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery has minimal charge).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- If the shifter still won't move out of Park, locate the shift lock override slot on the console.
- Remove the small rectangular cover/cap on the right side of the shifter base (near the P position) - you may need to pry gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving to Neutral.
- If the ignition cannot be turned on at all, you must use the override slot method - insert tool, press down, press shifter button, and shift to Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the override slot method is required. The mechanical override bypasses the electronic shift lock completely. Keep the tool inserted and pressed while shifting. If the shifter mechanism is completely frozen, the vehicle will need to be placed on a flatbed with dollies under the rear wheels.
