The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged.
- Turn the ignition to ON position.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the release button on the shifter and move to Neutral.
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override access point on the shifter console.
- Remove the small trim cover on the right side of the shifter base - use a trim tool or flathead screwdriver wrapped in cloth.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, you can release the override tool.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery and no electrical power, use the mechanical override method. Insert the tool into the override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral while holding. Note that without power, the steering will be locked - vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed, not towed conventionally.
