⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with parking brake engaged.
- Turn the ignition to ON position.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the release button on the shifter handle and move to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override access.
- Remove the small rectangular trim cover on the right side of the shifter base using a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot revealed beneath the cover.
- Press the override tool down firmly to mechanically release the shift lock.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral.
- Remove the override tool once Neutral is engaged.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the mechanical override is your only option. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down to mechanically release the shift lock mechanism. Shift to Neutral while holding the override. Important: Without electrical power, the steering lock will remain engaged and the vehicle cannot be steered. The vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed - do not attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground. The transmission parking pawl will remain engaged until you use the override, and wheel dollies may be needed to load the vehicle.
