🚨 2019-2024 Audi e-tron: Emergency Neutral
The 2019-2024 Audi e-tron uses an electronic shift-by-wire console-mounted lever that returns to center (monostable design) after each gear selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and wheels are chocked.
- Press the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the power button (or have the key fob nearby) to wake the vehicle electrical system.
- Push the shifter forward briefly and release to engage Neutral (the shifter will return to center position).
- Verify Neutral is selected on the instrument cluster display.
- If the shifter is unresponsive and you have electrical power, look for a small plastic cap labeled with a key symbol or 'shift lock' on the console to the right or below the shifter base.
- Remove the cap, insert a small screwdriver or key blade, and press down while attempting to move the shifter forward to Neutral.
- For flatbed towing with no power: The vehicle must be placed in Transport Mode - this requires some 12V battery power to access the MMI system.
- Access the MMI screen, navigate to CAR menu > Left side button > Service & Checks > Tow-away transport (menu path may vary slightly by model year), and activate Transport Mode.
- Transport Mode releases the parking brake electrically and allows all wheels to roll freely.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the console near the shifter base, typically to the right side; may be marked with a key symbol. Location varies by model year within this generation - consult owner's manual for precise location.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function at all. You MUST have at least some 12V power (jump-start or battery charger) to enable Transport Mode through the MMI. A completely dead battery requires jump-starting before the vehicle can be shifted or prepared for towing. The shift-by-wire system is entirely electronic with no direct mechanical linkage. Note: The 12V battery location is under the front hood on the passenger side.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The e-tron must be transported on a flatbed truck only - never tow with any wheels on the ground. The electric motors remain mechanically connected to the wheels and can generate dangerous voltage if the wheels rotate, potentially damaging the drive system and creating an electrical hazard. Always use Transport Mode before loading onto a flatbed to release the electronic parking brake. If Transport Mode cannot be activated due to complete power loss, the parking brake must be released manually using the emergency release procedure (requires removing rear cargo floor access panel to access parking brake module manual release cables) and the vehicle winched onto the flatbed with extreme caution.
