The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked
- Turn the ignition to ON (or ACC if no power to ON position)
- Press the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shifter release button on the side of the shifter and move to N
- If the shifter will not move (shift interlock engaged): Locate the shift lock override slot
- The override is accessed by removing a small rectangular cover directly in front of the shifter, on the console trim
- Pry off the cover carefully with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
- Insert the key or a small flathead screwdriver into the exposed slot and press down
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move to N

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and works without electrical power. With a dead battery, you cannot turn the ignition to ON, but the mechanical override allows shifter movement. Remove the override cover, press the override mechanism, and shift to N. The steering will remain locked unless the ignition has power.
