⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition on (press START button without brake pedal) to provide power to the shifter electronics.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shifter stalk down to select N (Neutral).
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and ignition cannot activate, proceed to the no-power procedure below.
- Before towing, consult the owner's manual for activating Transport Mode if the vehicle will be towed with wheels on the ground - improper towing can damage the electric drive system.
Shift-lock override location
The Q4 e-tron does not have a traditional mechanical shift lock override button; neutral selection requires 12V power to energize the shifter electronics and release the parking lock actuator.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic parking brake and transmission parking lock cannot be electrically released. Jump-start the 12V battery (located in the engine compartment) or connect an external 12V power source to gain enough power to turn on ignition and shift to neutral. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground using wheel dollies or a winch.

WARNING: The Q4 e-tron is a pure electric vehicle and must NOT be towed with any wheels on the ground unless Transport Mode is properly activated through the MMI system. Towing with wheels down without Transport Mode will cause severe damage to the electric drive system. Flatbed transport with all wheels off the ground is the safest method.
