⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and wheel chocks are in place
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not need to start the engine)
- Locate the shift lock override access - it is a small rectangular cover on the left side of the shifter housing near the base
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover
- While pressing the brake pedal (if power is available), insert a key or small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the button on the shifter and move it to N (neutral)
- If the vehicle starts rolling, the shifter has successfully engaged neutral
- Replace the shift lock override cover after shifting

With zero electrical power
If there is zero 12V power, the ignition cannot be turned on and the shift lock override may not release the shifter mechanism. Jump-start the 12V battery (located in the spare tire well under the cargo floor) to provide enough power for the ignition and shifter release mechanism. Even without starting the engine, turning the ignition to ON position should provide enough power for the override to work.
