⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (this may allow normal shifting with brake pedal depressed)
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover located on the driver's side of the shifter base, near the bottom of the console trim surrounding the shifter
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small plastic cover protecting the override slot
- Insert the key or a small flat-blade screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward into Neutral
- Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully engaged in Neutral
- If the vehicle must be towed, keep it in Neutral; for flatbed towing, no additional preparation is needed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the ignition cannot be turned on and the shifter will remain locked. You must use the mechanical shift lock override as described above. The override mechanism is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power to function.
