⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (this may allow normal shifting with brake pedal depressed)
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override—it is a small covered slot located on the left side (driver's side) of the shifter base assembly, integrated into the center console trim
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pry off the plastic cover cap over the override slot
- Insert the vehicle key blade (or small flat-blade screwdriver) into the exposed override slot and press downward firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter rearward to Neutral position
- Release the override once Neutral is engaged
- For towing, ensure the vehicle remains in Neutral; flatbed towing is preferred to avoid transmission damage
Shift-lock override location
Small covered rectangular slot on the left (driver's side) of the shifter base, flush with the console trim surrounding the shifter
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the ignition cannot activate and the electronic shifter remains locked. The mechanical shift lock override must be used as described. This override is a mechanical release that bypasses the electronic interlock system and does not require electrical power.
