The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (this may allow normal shifting with brake pedal depressed)
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap on the left side (driver's side) of the shifter base
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover cap
- Insert the vehicle key blade or a small flat-blade screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, move the shifter rearward into Neutral position
- Hold the override until Neutral is fully engaged, then release
- For towing, keep the vehicle in Neutral; flatbed towing is recommended for distances over short moves
