🚨 2017 Audi Q7: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Q7 (4M chassis) uses a console-mounted electronic shifter lever with shift-by-wire technology and electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position if 12V power is available (this may allow normal shifting with brake pedal depressed)
  3. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a plastic cap on the left side (driver's side) of the shifter base
  4. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the plastic cover cap
  5. Insert the vehicle key blade or a small flat-blade screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override depressed, move the shifter rearward into Neutral position
  7. Hold the override until Neutral is fully engaged, then release
  8. For towing, keep the vehicle in Neutral; flatbed towing is recommended for distances over short moves

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter interlock cannot be released electrically. The mechanical shift lock override must be used. This is a purely mechanical release mechanism that bypasses the electronic system and does not require any electrical power to operate.
