The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON position and attempt to shift normally with the brake pedal depressed
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override slot on the left side (driver's side) of the shifter base assembly
- The override is covered by a small rectangular plastic cap flush with the console trim—use a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off this cap
- Insert the vehicle key blade or a small flat-blade screwdriver into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, move the shifter rearward into Neutral position
- Maintain pressure on the override until Neutral is fully engaged, then release the tool
- For towing, keep the transmission in Neutral; flatbed towing is strongly recommended to avoid potential transmission damage from lack of internal lubrication
