The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal, or use emergency key access if battery is dead).
- Locate the shift lock override access—look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or front edge.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or emergency key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward to N position.
