⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Attempt to energize the vehicle: press the brake pedal and push the START button to enter READY mode if 12V battery has sufficient charge.
- If the shifter energizes, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to N (Neutral) position.
- If the vehicle will not enter READY mode due to dead 12V battery, locate the shift-lock override: look for a small rectangular or circular cover near the base of the shifter on the left or front side.
- Pry off the override cover using a flat-blade screwdriver or the mechanical key blade.
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to N position.
- For towing: activate Transport Mode if the 12V system can be powered (see owner's manual for menu access via MMI). Transport Mode disables parking lock for flat-towing short distances.
- WARNING: The RS e-tron GT must be transported on a flatbed truck. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground for extended distances as the electric motors are mechanically connected to the wheels and will generate uncontrolled voltage, potentially causing severe damage.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the high-voltage system cannot engage and the parking pawl remains locked. The shift-lock override allows moving the shifter to N, but the parking pawl in the transmission may still be engaged. You may need to jump-start the 12V battery (located in front trunk) to fully release the parking pawl. If completely dead, the vehicle may need to be winched onto a flatbed with wheels locked. Do not attempt to push or roll the vehicle with drive wheels on the ground for any significant distance.

CRITICAL: This is a battery electric vehicle. The electric motors are permanently connected to the drive wheels. Towing with wheels on the ground will rotate the motors, generating uncontrolled high voltage that can destroy the inverter and motor controllers. FLATBED TRANSPORT ONLY for any distance beyond a few feet for loading. Transport Mode must be activated via the MMI system if 12V power is available, but this is only for short-distance flat-towing in emergencies—always use a flatbed.
