🚨 2004 Audi RS6: Emergency Neutral
The 2004 RS6 (C5 generation) uses a traditional center console floor-mounted shifter lever for the 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with electronic shift-lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake
- Turn the ignition to position II (ON) if possible to provide power to the shift lock solenoid
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock release cover - it is a small rectangular or circular plastic cap on the shifter console, typically on the right side of the shifter base or just behind the shifter knob
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
- Insert the screwdriver into the release slot and press down while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park into Neutral
- If electrical power is available, the override should release the lock immediately; maintain pressure on both the override and shifter
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small cover cap on or near the shifter console base, typically to the right side or behind the shifter - exact location requires visual inspection of the specific console trim
With zero electrical power
The C5 RS6 shift lock mechanism has both electronic and mechanical components. With zero power, the mechanical override may still function but will be very stiff. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly while applying pressure to the override and shifter to release mechanical binding in the transmission park pawl. If this fails, jump-starting the 12V battery to provide minimal power is recommended.
