🚨 2021 Audi RS6: Emergency Neutral

The 2021 RS6 Avant (C8 generation) uses a compact center console-mounted shifter lever for the 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with electronic shift-by-wire and shift-lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position - the electronic shifter requires electrical power to function
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override - look for a small cover or slot on the right side of the shifter base or in the center console storage area near the shifter
  5. Remove the override cover (it may be under a rubber mat or small plastic cap in the console)
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press firmly while attempting to move the shifter from P to N
  7. The C8 platform's shift-by-wire system may require at least minimal battery voltage to activate the transmission range selector even with the override
  8. If successful in engaging Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Override access is typically in the center console area near the shifter base - look for a small removable cover on the right side of the shifter or in the adjacent storage compartment; specific location may require removing console trim or mats
With zero electrical power
The C8 RS6 uses a modern shift-by-wire system that is heavily dependent on electrical power. With completely dead battery, the mechanical override alone may not successfully engage neutral because the transmission control module needs power to move the range selector. Jump-starting the 12V battery to provide minimal system power is strongly recommended. If jump-starting is not possible and the override doesn't work, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels off the ground - do NOT flat-tow.
