The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and wheel chocks are in place.
- Turn the ignition key to the ON/ACC position if possible - this is not strictly required but may make the shifter easier to move.
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is typically a small covered slot near the base of the shifter, usually on the left or right side of the shifter boot/console.
- Remove the cover cap from the override slot (you may need a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry it off).
- Insert a key, small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly - this mechanically releases the shift lock mechanism.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
