🚨 2022 Audi S5: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 S5 uses a traditional console-mounted gear lever with electronic shift lock integrated into the shifter base.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position (press START without brake pedal twice) to provide power to the shifter solenoid
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near where the lever meets the console
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small cover cap
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key firmly into the override slot and push down while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to release from Park
  6. Move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the vehicle must be towed, ensure the steering lock is disengaged by turning the steering wheel slightly while the ignition is in accessory mode

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you will need to provide auxiliary 12V power via the jump-start terminals under the hood (positive terminal under red cap, negative ground point on engine or chassis). Once minimal power is available, the shift lock override slot becomes functional. The steering lock may also engage with zero power—connecting power is necessary before attempting to shift or move the vehicle.
