The procedure
- Set the parking brake and confirm the vehicle is on a level surface
- Attempt to power the vehicle to accessory mode by pressing START twice without the brake pedal (this energizes the shifter electronics)
- Locate the shift lock release slot on the left side of the shifter base—it will have a small plastic cover cap
- Carefully pry off the cover using the emergency metal key or a trim tool
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key blade into the release slot and press firmly downward
- While maintaining pressure on the override, pull the shifter back out of Park into Neutral
- If resistance is felt, ensure you are pressing the override fully and pulling the lever straight back

With zero electrical power
With a totally dead battery, the electronic systems will not function. Connect an external 12V source to the jump-start terminals under the hood (positive under red cap on the driver's side, negative to ground point on engine). Once power is restored, the shift lock override will work. The steering lock also requires electrical power to disengage, so do not attempt to push or tow without establishing at least minimal 12V supply.
