The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or press start button twice without brake pedal) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if electrical system is functional) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the brake pedal does not activate the shift lock due to failed switch, continue holding the override down and move the shifter to Neutral without pressing the brake
- Keep the override tool in place until the shifter is fully in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic shift lock may remain engaged. The mechanical override slot should still function - insert tool and apply firm downward pressure while attempting to shift. If the shifter remains locked solid, the vehicle will need to be placed in tow mode by accessing the transmission from underneath (dealer/professional service required) or loaded onto a flatbed with wheels off the ground.
