⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge (this may allow normal shifting with brake pedal depressed)
- If no power or shift lock will not release, locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover located on the left side of the shifter base in the center console
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key fully into the override slot while pulling the shifter button and move the shifter to N
- Keep the override tool inserted and held down while moving through gear positions if needed
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed - DO NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override must be used. The mechanical override bypasses all electronics. Ensure the steering wheel is not locked - you may need to rock the wheel while turning the key to ACC position if the wheel lock is engaged.
