🚨 2018 Audi TTS: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 Audi TTS uses a monostable center-console shifter (spring-return joystick) that controls the S tronic dual-clutch transmission electronically.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Insert the key fob into the ignition slot (or have it in the vehicle for Keyless Access models).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the Engine Start/Stop button without pressing the brake to cycle to 'Ignition ON' (accessory power—dash lights up but engine does not start).
  5. With ignition on and brake pressed, move the shifter rearward to the 'N' (Neutral) position—it will spring back but the transmission should engage neutral.
  6. Verify neutral engagement by checking the instrument cluster display shows 'N'.
  7. If the shifter will not respond (shift interlock failure), locate the shift lock release override: remove the small rectangular cover panel on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the console); insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the exposed slot and press down while moving the shifter to neutral.
  8. Once in neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled onto a flatbed.

Small rectangular cover panel on the left (driver's) side of the shifter base; press down in the slot beneath it with a screwdriver while moving shifter.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the monostable shifter will not function electronically and the shift lock override will also not work. You must jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source (jumper pack to the jump-start terminals under the hood) to power the shifter module enough to select neutral. The override release requires at least accessory power to unlock the shifter mechanism.
