🚨 2021 Audi TTS: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Audi TTS uses a console-mounted DCT lever with electronic shift-by-wire; position is confirmed via electronic actuators rather than mechanical cable linkage.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal) to energize the shift lock system
- Press and hold the brake pedal fully
- Press the shift lock release button on the shifter (if electrical power is available) and move the shifter to N
- If the shifter will not release electrically, locate the shift lock override access—typically a small cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the right side or behind the shift boot
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to N
- If the transmission remains in P electronically and the override does not mechanically release it, contact Audi roadside assistance or use a flatbed tow truck—do NOT attempt to force the shifter
Shift-lock override location
Small cap or access point at the base of the shifter console, typically on the right side or integrated into the shift boot trim; exact location may require removal of trim cup around shifter base
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the DCT shift-by-wire system is completely inoperative. The shift lock override may not mechanically release the transmission from Park because the DCT uses electronic pawl control. Jump-start the 12V battery or connect a battery booster pack to restore minimal power, then use the override procedure. If jump-starting is impossible, flatbed towing is required—the vehicle cannot be shifted to neutral mechanically without electrical power in most cases.
