- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake
- Turn the ignition key to ON (or ACC) position to attempt to energize the shift lock solenoid
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Attempt to move the column shifter from P to N; if it releases, you are done
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override access on the steering column—look for a small plastic cap or slot near the base of the shifter lever on the column shroud
- Remove the cap (it may snap off or slide out) to reveal the override button or slot
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press the release mechanism
- While holding the override, press the brake pedal and shift the lever to N
- If no override access is visible on the column, check under the lower steering column cover; you may need to remove a small trim panel to access the interlock release
