🚨 1994 Audi V8 Quattro: Emergency Neutral

The 1994 Audi V8 Quattro uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical cable linkage and a shift interlock solenoid activated by the brake pedal.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake
  2. Turn the ignition key to ON (or ACC) position to attempt to energize the shift lock solenoid
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Attempt to move the column shifter from P to N; if it releases, you are done
  5. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override access on the steering column—look for a small plastic cap or slot near the base of the shifter lever on the column shroud
  6. Remove the cap (it may snap off or slide out) to reveal the override button or slot
  7. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press the release mechanism
  8. While holding the override, press the brake pedal and shift the lever to N
  9. If no override access is visible on the column, check under the lower steering column cover; you may need to remove a small trim panel to access the interlock release
Shift-lock override location
On or near the steering column shroud, typically on the right side of the shifter lever assembly; a small cap or access hole may need to be removed to reach the interlock release button
With zero electrical power
With no power, the shift interlock solenoid defaults to the locked position, but the mechanical override will bypass it. Use the override slot as described; since the linkage is cable-operated, the shifter will move to N once the interlock is defeated. If the ignition lock prevents key removal, leave the key in the ignition during towing.
