⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or press start button without brake pedal if battery has some charge)
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, beneath a small removable cap
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the emergency key blade to pry off the cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move electrically, maintain pressure on the override and manually pull the shifter rearward to Neutral position
- Replace the cap after shifting

With completely dead battery, the shift-lock override may still work mechanically. Access the override slot as described, press and hold it down, then attempt to physically move the shifter to Neutral. The electronic gate may resist; apply firm steady pressure. If unsuccessful, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with rear wheels raised or on dollies. Do NOT force the shifter excessively as internal components can be damaged.
