The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if possible
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or ACC if battery is weak but has some power)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override slot near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular cover or slot on the console near the shifter lever
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the small cover if present
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot while pressing the brake pedal
- Press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral while holding the override down
- If successful, the vehicle can now roll; if loading onto a flatbed, ensure all wheels are secured
