⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks
- If the 12V battery has power, turn the ignition to ON/RUN position (do not start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override access - there is a small cover/cap on the left side of the shifter console base
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override access cover
- Insert a small screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down while pulling the shifter to Neutral
- Release the override and verify the transmission display shows 'N' for Neutral
- If the vehicle will not start to move under its own power, it must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground - do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override may not function. You will need to jump-start the 12V battery (located in the trunk) to at least power the body control module, then use the override procedure. If unable to get any power, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed in Park.
