The 1999 328i (E36) uses a traditional mechanical console shifter with cable-actuated shift lock connected to the brake light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks
- If battery has power, turn the ignition key to position II (ON) - engine does not need to run
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override button - it is a small rectangular button immediately to the right of the shifter base, often with a small cover cap
- If there is a cover, pry it off carefully with a flat-blade screwdriver or fingernail
- Press and hold the override button down firmly with a pen, key, or small screwdriver
- While holding the button down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Release the override button
- The vehicle can now be pushed or rolled, or started and driven

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override button still works. Simply press the override button (skip the ignition-on step) and move to Neutral. The E36 uses a mechanical cable system, so no electrical power is required to release the shifter.
