🚨 2000 BMW 328i: Emergency Neutral
The 2000 328i (E46 - first model year for the redesign) uses a traditional mechanical console shifter with cable-actuated shift lock connected to the brake light switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks
- If battery has power, turn the ignition key to position II (ON) - engine does not need to run
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Locate the shift lock override - there is a small rectangular cover cap directly to the right of the shifter base
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the ignition key to carefully pry off the cover cap
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- Release the override and replace the cover cap
- The vehicle can now be pushed or rolled, or started and driven

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override still works. Simply pry off the cover cap and use the override (skip the ignition-on step) to move to Neutral. The E46 uses a mechanical cable system, so no electrical power is required to release the shifter.
