🚨 1996 BMW 328is E36: Emergency Neutral

The E36 328is uses a conventional floor-mounted console shifter with a PRND shift pattern and a shift lock button on the side of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position I or II (accessory/on) if possible; if battery is completely dead, proceed to next step.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening on the left side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console trim.
  4. Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot (it may require prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or similar tool).
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter from Park through Reverse, Neutral, or Drive as needed.
  7. If no electrical power is available and the override does not release, you may need to manually release the shift lock mechanism under the console (see noPowerNotes).

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override slot should still function mechanically. Insert tool into the override slot and press down while attempting to shift. If the shifter remains locked, you may need to remove the center console trim around the shifter (typically held by clips and screws) to access the shift lock solenoid and manually push the release lever. As a last resort, disconnect the shift lock cable at the transmission to allow free movement, but this requires working under the vehicle.
