⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply parking brake and chock wheels
- Turn ignition to position 2 (ON) if possible
- Press brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock button on the right side of the shifter handle and move to neutral
- If shift lock does not release due to failed brake switch or no power, locate the small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or key to pry off the cover
- Insert the screwdriver into the exposed shift lock override slot and press down firmly
- While maintaining downward pressure on the override, move the shifter to neutral
- Release the override once shifter is in neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base (toward driver's door); pry off to reveal the manual shift lock override slot
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the normal shift lock button will not work. Use the manual override: pry off the small cover on the left side of the shifter base, insert screwdriver into the slot, press down, and shift to neutral. This is a purely mechanical release requiring no electrical power.
