🚨 2001 BMW 330i: Emergency Neutral

The E46 330i uses a Steptronic automatic console shifter with a traditional gate and integrated shift lock mechanism operated by a button on the right side of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake and chock wheels
  2. Turn ignition to position 2 (ON) if possible
  3. Press brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shift lock button on the right side of the shifter handle and move to neutral
  5. If shift lock does not release due to failed brake switch or no power, locate the small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base
  6. Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or key to pry off the cover
  7. Insert the screwdriver into the exposed shift lock override slot and press down firmly
  8. While maintaining downward pressure on the override, move the shifter to neutral
  9. Release the override once shifter is in neutral
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base (toward driver's door); pry off to reveal the manual shift lock override slot
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the normal shift lock button will not work. Use the manual override: pry off the small cover on the left side of the shifter base, insert screwdriver into the slot, press down, and shift to neutral. This is a purely mechanical release requiring no electrical power.
