🚨 2022 BMW 330i: Emergency Neutral

The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (if functional).
- Locate the shift lock override release slot — it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to gently pry off the plastic cover cap.
- With the ignition off (or on if battery permits), press the brake pedal firmly.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
- If you have no electrical power at all, see the 'No Power' procedure below.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter may not respond to the override alone. You may need to provide temporary 12V power via jump-starting or a booster pack to energize the shifter module enough to release the lock. Attempt the override procedure first; if unsuccessful, jump the battery briefly (you do not need to start the engine), then use the override. As a last resort, the transmission has a mechanical release accessible from underneath the vehicle near the transmission — this requires lifting the car and is best left to a flatbed operator or technician.
