⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if the battery has any remaining power—this may allow normal shifting with the brake pedal pressed.
- If the ignition cannot power the shift lock, locate the shift lock override slot on the center console to the left of the shifter base, near the driver's side.
- Remove the small rectangular plastic cover (approximately 1 inch by 0.5 inch) by gently prying it up with a flat tool or your fingernail.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the plastic cover.
- The vehicle can now be moved or towed in Neutral; for flatbed towing, follow BMW's towing guidelines for AWD vehicles.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override is your only option—the override slot bypasses the electronic interlock entirely and works without any battery power. You do not need to turn the key or have any electrical function.
