⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if possible (requires some 12V power).
- If the vehicle has any 12V power, turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without foot on brake).
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then move the shift lever to the left and forward to select Neutral.
- If completely dead with no 12V power, locate the shift lock override: remove the small circular cover cap on the center console immediately to the right of the shift lever base.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the shift lock release slot and press down while moving the shifter to Neutral.
- The transmission will remain in Neutral, but Park pawl may re-engage when vehicle loses all power—wheel chocks are mandatory.
- For flatbed towing, all four wheels should be off the ground, or use a tow dolly for the rear wheels with the front wheels secured on the flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic parking brake may be engaged and cannot be released electronically. The shift lock override allows shifting to Neutral, but you cannot release the EPB without jump-starting the 12V system or accessing the EPB motor directly (complex procedure requiring rear caliper access). For dead-battery situations, jump-start the vehicle first to release EPB, then use override if shift interlock has failed.
