🚨 2014 BMW 5 Series F10: Emergency Neutral
The F10 5 Series uses an electronic console-mounted shift lever that springs back to center position after each input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Locate the small plastic cap on the right side of the shifter base, near the P button
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap
- Insert the metal ignition key (or small screwdriver) into the exposed shift lock release slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power is available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no 12V power is available, continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter to Neutral without pressing the brake

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not illuminate or provide feedback. The mechanical shift lock override still functions—insert key into override slot and hold down while moving shifter to N. The transmission will mechanically be in Neutral even though no display confirmation appears. You may need to use more force than normal as there is no electronic assist.
