🚨 2017 BMW 5 Series G30: Emergency Neutral

The G30 5 Series uses an electronic console-mounted shift lever similar to F10 but with updated styling, which springs back to center position after each input.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Locate the small plastic cap on the right side of the shifter base, near the P button
  3. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override cap
  4. Insert the metal ignition key (or small screwdriver) into the exposed shift lock release slot and push down firmly
  5. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if 12V power is available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  6. If no 12V power is available, continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter to Neutral without pressing the brake

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not illuminate or provide feedback. The mechanical shift lock override still functions—insert key into override slot and hold down while moving shifter to N. The transmission will mechanically be in Neutral even though no display confirmation appears. The G30 shifter may feel different from F10 but the mechanical override operates the same way.
